How Ira Harbison Supports Students

  • Provide additional instructional support: Ira Harbison has part-time Impact Teachers, funded by state and federal funds, who provide support to help struggling students perform at grade level. As students are identified as needing assistance, the Impact Teacher develops a learning plan to address the student’s needs. Language arts and resource specialists also provide support for the lowest-performing students and those in special education.
  • Identify students with special needs and provide assistance: Ira Harbison has two special day classes for special education students based on the severity of the student’s handicap or learning disability. Teachers work with special needs students in primary grades to provide interventions and recommend placement in special day classes, if necessary. The special day class for severely handicapped students includes students from throughout the district.
  • Address home and family issues affecting students: Ira Harbison provides support for families by referring parents to the local Family Resource Center funded by a medical collaborative, the district and other small grants. Through this partnership, the school helps link parents to valuable social services including housing assistance, case management, and health services.
