Publication Date: 2003, October

Summary or Abstract: The purpose of this report, prepared by ETS, is to focus on the sources of the achievement gap rather than to suggest programs or interventions to close the achievement gap. The report identifies 14 home, school, and community research based correlates to academic success, and then provides summaries and charts disaggregating the correlates by race, ethnicity, and some measure of income or socioeconomic status. The stated intent of the report is to “focus the political will on what really needs to be changed to eliminate persistent educational inequality.” Although this report does not suggest programs or interventions to close the achievement gap, it does recognize that the community schools movement addresses the issues identified in this report.
