Summary or Abstract: This report, funded by the Mailman Family Foundation, the David and Lucille Packard Foundation, and the Atlantic Philanthropies, was prepared by the National Council of La Raza (NCLR), the largest national Hispanic and civil rights organization in the U.S. The report addresses the early childhood needs of Hispanic children, the fastest growing segment of the U.S. child population, from a school readiness perspective. Findings and recommendations from the report indicate that the achievement gap between Latino and White children will continue into secondary school until more Latino infants and toddlers participate in early childhood programs that emphasize culturally appropriate early literacy and language development, support and train parents and caregivers, and allow for greater access to public health programs. With a federal focus, the report includes background data, status of current programs, and policy recommendations.
