Summary or Abstract: The goal of this report is to present a national view of the status of English language proficiency (ELP) assessments since these assessments play a vital role in English language learner (ELL) students’ academic careers in many ways including their classification, assessment of their content knowledge, curriculum planning, and graduation. Such issues also raise important equity considerations, especially as the population of ELL students is increasing rapidly. Chapter 9 of this report provides a summary and recommendations to help states improve the quality of ELP assessments.
