Summary or Abstract: The authors examine California state policies to close the achievement gaps, and review the challenges that are unique to our state. They then survey the policy frameworks adopted in other states in the efforts to close achievement gaps, with a particular focus on states that are comparable to California in terms of size and demographics. Finally, they discuss main policy levers available to the state and identify promising policies adopted elsewhere, concluding with a discussion of the critical importance of policy learning in the effort to close the gap.
